Elizabeth Bailey, Artist
Penny Smith and Harry Leverette, Owners
Gertrude is a 1967 Ford Falcon Futura with an ever-changing personality.
Purchased in 1994 to be an art car covered with CD-ROMs, she was originally named
Gertrude the Multimedia CD-ROMobile. The initial design called for hundreds of
individually crafted CDs to be glued onto the body of the car.
When it came time
to apply glue, however, the spirit of Gertrude cried out to be painted
instead.
Gertrude is a work in
progress and currently sports an original painting by Houston artist Elizabeth
Bailey. Elizabeth will paint the remainder of the car in 1996, while owner Penny
Smith will complete the interior.
Gertrude is dedicated to the memory of her one and only previous owner, Gertrude
Beaman. and to the commemoration of Gertrude Stein.
